As an Alberta homeowner, choosing the right outdoor lighting can make all the difference, both in how your property looks and how it functions year-round. At Drip Lightscaping, we specialize in premium lighting solutions that not only elevate your space, but also withstand Alberta’s demanding climate. Whether you're lighting your home, business, or landscape, understanding the difference between solar and hardwired lighting is essential.
Why Solar Lighting Fails in Alberta’s Cold Climate
Solar lighting is often marketed as convenient and eco-friendly, but in Alberta’s environment, it rarely lives up to expectations. Here’s why:
1. Tiny Batteries + Weak Panels
Most solar fixtures are built with small, low-capacity batteries and undersized solar panels. In Alberta:
Short winter days and frequent overcast skies limit charging.
Snow often blocks solar panels for days or weeks.
Cold temperatures dramatically reduce battery performance and lifespan.
2. Non-Serviceable Design
Solar lights are usually sealed units. That means no access to replace the battery, panel, or internal components. Once the battery fails (and it will), the entire light is garbage.
3. False Economy
They may seem cost-effective at first, but when solar lights fail in their first or second winter, you'll find yourself replacing them again and again.

The Verdict
If you want lighting that actually works in Alberta’s conditions, go with hardwired. Solar lights may work in the summer, but they won’t survive our
winters, or meet your expectations after the first season.
